BRUSSELS, 18 May 1998 (MAHA) — What is the European Union’s role in Third World AIDS struggles ?
Top-level ministers and experts will meet in the EU’s Development Committee on Tuesday 19 May 1998 to discuss the EU’s role in fighting AIDS in "developing countries".
This meeting appears to be an initiative of Bernard Kouchner, French Health Secretary. The French government is pushing for an international "therapeutic solidarity fund" to improve access to combination therapy for people with HIV/AIDS in Third World countries.
No Third World organization has been invited to participate in the public meeting.
Participants include Clare Short, UK Development Council President UK Secretary of State for International Development and Bernard Kouchner, French Health Secretary. Dr Michael Adler is one of the researchers who will address the committee.
